Sugar Rush

Watching Ace of Cakes does NOT make you Duff Goldman. Too bad.

I’d been hoping that my creative juices would flow like no other when designing a cake for an upcoming Relief Society event.  Unfortunately I've watched so many amazing artists work their magic with confection that all my ideas were out of my scope of talent.  Waaaaaaayyyyyy out.  As I dreamt of buying an airbrush machine and rolling my own fondant I momentarily came up for air and thought that I should  just do something that I could do well.  That way I'd end up with something presentable instead of a messy heap.

Let's back up and explain this project.  I volunteered to make a cake to represent the month of March for a church event last week.  My thoughts went to St. Patty's Day; green, rainbows, leprechauns, pots of gold, butterflies, shamrocks and clovers.  I finally settled on something that I've never attempted, wasn't sure I could pull off, but knew would be a big hit.  Enter: The Rainbow Cake.

I used the techniques and recipe from this site.  The cake recipe was fantastic, but the frosting was a flop.  I'm sure it was my fault, as I've never made meringue before, but whatever.  I whipped up a simple lemon buttercream instead, and it was delish.  (Get it?  Lemon buttercream?  Like the gold at the end of the rainbow?  Sometimes I'm clever.)

Here's my work in progress:

And here it is devoured:

A big thanks to my friend, Cara, who snapped this shot for me. :)

The cake was a HUGE hit!  It was super yummy and had a wow factor that I wasn't fully prepared for.  I was so giddy.  I'm a little embarrassed when I think about it.

  1. I have to make a cake for our Relief Society birthday dinner. We hare having cakes as the center pieces on each table and then that will be the dessert. I am an great baker but horrible at the frosting part. But I think this is a super cute cake so I am going to steal your idea. Don't worry if people ask I will give you credit! Thanks for the inspiration!
